What a day from San Diego and the 2011 Pokémon World Championships! The best Pokémon Trading Card Game and video game players from around the globe showed up ready to give it their all.

The day began with an amazing Opening Ceremony. Hosted by emcee Nick McCord, the ceremony include a performance by the band MTM with Battle Woman M, whose members include Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version director Junichi Masuda and other Pokémon creators. After the ceremony concluded and the lights came back on, it was all business for our super competitors.

Both the Pokémon TCG and video game tournaments began with Swiss rounds, meaning players could play in every round of the day. And at the end of the day’s competition, the field has been narrowed down to 16 players per age division the in Pokémon TCG tournament and 8 per age division in the video game tournament.

Tomorrow, those players will compete in single-elimination rounds until there’s only one player left in each division—the 2011 World Champions!

For the rest of the fans in attendance, there was plenty of Pokémon fun to be had. Those not competing in the official tournament filled the open gaming room for competitive Side Events and friendly matches. The Creative Center was buzzing with folks showing off their artistic skills. And of course, many spectators watched their favorite players compete throughout the day.
